The research carried out at InBIO is mainly focused on the organism composition of the biosphere and the underlying mechanisms that account for it, with the ultimate goal to generate the knowledge necessary for PRESERVATION OF NATURE and prediction of its future. This knowledge is particularly important in light of the rapid loss of biodiversity in all regions of the world and with the expected global change.
InBIO currently harbours 34 RESEARCH GROUPS, whose activity is structured upon THREE MAIN RESEARCH LINES, covering the whole research field:
Understanding biogeographic patterns, the formation of new species and hybridization, adaptation, domestication and co-evolution
Understanding the mechanisms driving species persistence and diversity from local communities to the global scale, and to inform biodiversity conservation strategies
Understanding how human actions interact with natural processes to affect ecosystems and the environment at large, and to find practical solutions to promote the sustainable use of the natural world and natural resources
InBIO’s engagement in these three major research areas prompts the INTEGRATION OF BASIC SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH TO APPLIED QUESTIONS, which FACILITATES TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND SCIENTIFIC DISSEMINATION.
In turn, these allow for a significant enhancement of the impact of the research performed, thus promoting the achievement of a robust scientific underpinning for innovation, scientific culture and education.
The PERFECT ALLIANCE BETWEEN RESEARCH AND EDUCATION at InBIO is elegantly demonstrated by the 3 ongoing INVITED CHAIRS funded in close collaboration with private companies, currently installed in the context of a very relevant funding scheme launched by FCT in 2008.
